Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) are common and widespread in the United States, and often found in small flocks on shores, meadows, wetlands, and in coastal open fields. Their double black breast bands, orange eye ring, and tawny orange rumps are very distinctive. They are medium-sized plovers, measuring about 10.5 inches in length and about 3.3 ounces in weight. They commonly feed on insects.
This Killdeer bathing in a puddle in a large parking lot at the Magee Marsh was photographed in the morning on 5-11-2021. Magee Marsh is located east of Toledo, Ohio on the southern shore of Lake Erie, and is a major stopover of migrating warblers during spring migration. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/2000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1250.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
Water Forms, 5-20-2021
Nikon Full Frame Cameras, 6-4-2021
